Announcing our Piccolo Spoleto Exhibit: Celebrating Women

The Center for Women marks its 20th Anniversary with “Celebrating Women,” a Piccolo Spoleto visual arts event featuring works by eight members of Women’s Caucus for Art Charleston. Artists include Karole Turner Campbell, Betsey Carter, Beckie Dobbs, Leigh Ann Davis, Linda Elksnin, Kate Landichow, Laura Szweda, and Lillian Trettin.

An opening reception kicks off the show from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25 at The Center for Women, 129 Cannon Street. The reception is free to the public. “Celebrating Women” will run during Piccolo Spoleto from May 28 through August 31, Monday through Friday. The WCA/C4W Piccolo Exhibit is inspired by the work of photojournalist Paola Gianturco. Ms. Gianturco traveled the world for four years to photograph festivals that celebrate women. She also interviewed performers, vendors, spectators, governmental officials, and religious leaders. She published her photographs in her book, Celebrating Women, in 2004.

North Charleston Arts Festival
The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department proudly presents the 2010 North Charleston Arts Festival, April 30 - May 8. This nine day celebration of the arts is one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the Lowcountry, providing thousands of residents & visitors with a fabulous array of performances, exhibitions, and activities. The Main Event, held May 1 & 2 at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center & Charleston Area Convention Center Complex, offers free admission and parking to over 40 performances on four stages. Other Main Event activities include judged art, photography, and fine craft exhibitions, a gem & mineral show, children's activities, Art & Craft booths, and an Outdoor Food Court. The Arts Festival continues with over 50 free or moderately priced ticketed events throughout the week at various locations around North Charleston and concludes with fireworks over the Cooper River at the Grand Finale at Riverfront Park on Saturday, May 8.

An Introduction to Materials and Methods with Ruth Ballou

Cone 10 member Ruth Ballou will be teaching a glaze workshop in April at the studio. With her experience in glaze calculation and developing glazes, this will be a useful and informative workshop - one not to be missed!

This overview is designed for ceramic students seeking to expand their understanding of glazes. We will cover materials and their specific uses in glazes and will focus on testing, evaluation and modification of existing glazes. This 2 day workshop is held over 2 weekends to allow time for firing of glaze tests.

At a time when paperbacks seem to crumble and disappear almost over night, The Book as Art: Artists’ Books from the National Museum of Women in the Arts is a real gem. Beautifully designed and published in 2007 by Princeton Architectural Press for NMWA in Washington, D.C., it marked the occasion of the museum’s 20th anniversary. The volume highlights one of the finest collections of artists’ books in the world, containing over 800 unique and limited-edition volumes by women artists both renowned and newly discovered. The collection was assembled over 20 years by Krystyna Wasserman, director of the museum’s Library and Research Center from 1982 to 2002 and current curator of book arts.

The Book as Art introduces readers to the rich variety of form, content, and artistic media that characterize artists’ books. Topics range from family history to poetry and politics, familiar tales to wild fantasies. For example, a performance artist tells a “glove story” in which hands pop up. An environmentalist writes on delicate sheafs of birds’ wings. A faux box of candies holds “pages” full of social commentary that’s not so sweet. Bindings are humble or elaborately crafted in wood, metal and stone. Etchings, woodcuts, and letter-press text decorate some pages. Other pages of handmade paper are sumptuously painted. There are even pages made of smashed tin cans and bottle tops. Due to the intimacy of scale, emphasis on narrative, and frequency of collaborative effort, artists’ books are most often the domain of talented women artists. And this compliation of “book introductions” demonstrates the extent to which women are responsible for works of the highest creative order.

The pairing of these exhibitions is intended to highlight humanitarian crises in two troubled African nations. In an effort to familiarize our audiences with aspects of history that do not often receive in-depth attention in conventional media, these exhibitions serve as examples of the College of Charleston's campus-wide commitment to the discussion of international issues. The Halsey Institute will be a drop off for Better World Books for the duration of the exhibition. Better World Books supports book drives and collects used books and textbooks through a network of over 1,800 college campuses and partnerships with over 2,000 libraries nationwide. So far, the company has converted more than 25 million donated books into $7.3 million in funding for literacy and education. In the process, they've also diverted more than 13,000 tons of books from landfills. The Halsey Institute's programming is funded in part by a major grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.

South Carolina fine and graphic artists are invited to compete in the Art Design Competition for the 2010 North Charleston Arts Festival. The winning artist will be honored with a $500 Purchase Award and the original artwork will become part of the City's Public Art Collection. The piece will also be featured on the cover of Festival brochures, T-shirts, and posters. Additionally, the winning artist will have the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at the North Charleston City Gallery during the month of May, 2010. WCA - Regional News

After a brief hiatus, WCA Charleston is up-and-running.. We kicked off the fall with an environmentally-themed show, “Gaea, Goddess of the Earth.” The show ran from September 21 through October 31 at The Real Estate Studio in Charleston . Janice Rossman, a local gallery director, considered the framework of “earth personified” to curate the exhibition. Participating artists included Sandra Brett, Betsey Carter, Leigh Ann Davis, Stephanie Drawdy, Linda Elksnin, Laura Liberatore Szweda, and Lillian Trettin. Our October 20 meeting was a brainstorming session that helped us identify organization goals, including member services and outreach activities. Meetings for the remainder of the year are scheduled. Wcacharleston.blogspot.com continues to be a great source of information for members of the arts community. Finally, WCA Charleston joined Charleston Arts Coalition (CAC!). The goals of CAC! are to unite and sustain the greater Charleston Arts Community by acting as a forum for collaborating on projects, exchanging ideas, and hosting special events.

• Participation is FREE.
• Applicant must be at least 18 years of age and a South
Carolina resident.
• Only original artwork completed within the last two years
will be considered for exhibition. An original artwork is the
artist’s sole creation and is not, in whole or in part, a copy
of another person’s work or photography.
• Maximum of 5 entries per artist / Max size 36”x36”.
• Artwork must be framed or have gallery wrapped finished
edges. Artwork must be wired and ready for display.
• Artwork previously exhibited in the North Charleston City
Gallery will not be eligible.
• The Review Panel will accept original two-dimensional
artwork for consideration. Optional support material,
including resume, exhibit history, and artist’s website will
aid in the selection process.
• Entries are submitted to the City of North Charleston
Cultural Arts Department on the second floor of North
Charleston City Hall at 2500 City Hall Lane, North
Charleston, SC 29406.
• Do not include “North Charleston Arts Festival”, and/or
festival dates on the artwork.
• If selected, the winning artwork will become part of the
City’s permanent Public Art Collection and the City will hold
sole rights to reproduce the image for publicity on various
items and advertisements.

A touring short video festival (see the prospectus)

DESCRIPTION
Artists living in the American South share a particular voice that draws from a combination of unique influences and
contradictions. A recipe thick as the woods, heat, and accents combined with history, tradition, and modern technology,
creates a story that reflects a culture that is rarely captured. Plugged Art Collective invites all artists living and working in
the American South to share their artworks, observations, and experiences.

GUIDELINES
Plugged Art Collective seeks short video works that are original in their use of the medium. Video entries of all lengths up
to 5 minutes with a max of 3 videos per artist, and all genres including, but not limited to: experimental, narrative,
documentary, animation. All video works must have been completed no earlier than 2007. “Hot Sauce & Magnolias”
will tour at various venues for 2 years. Screening begins in Spring 2010. All video entries must be submitted in data
format, NTSC (NO AUTO PLAY or DVD MENUS). Only DVDs can be accommodated.

ENTRY FEE: There is NO FEE for submission.

DEADLINE: Wednesday, September 30th

Creative Spaces Open Discussion - Developing a unified Center for the Arts in Charleston

Open discussion to be held on July 1 at 7:00p.m, Creative Spaces: Developing a unified Center for the Arts, to follow up the Creative Spaces panel discussion hosted at Redux Contemporary Art Center on April 24, 2008.

Where & When:
All interested parties are invited to join the newly created Charleston Arts Coalition from 6:30 – 8:00 PM at Theater 99, located at 280 Meeting Street, downtown Charleston, South Carolina, above the Bicycle Shoppe, with an entrance to the upstairs at the rear of the building. (843) 853-6687

Panel Members:
The panel will consist of Chris Price, of PrimeSouth Group, LLC, urban planner Tripp Muldrow, of Arnett Muldrow & Associates, Jonathan Brilliant, local artist and Gibbes Museum employee, and Fred Delk of Columbia Development Corp., with Buff Ross serving as moderator. The panel is comprised of individuals that have worked on collaborative projects similar to the vision of The Peoples Arts Center.

What to Do:
Spread the word and support the project. The arts are a vital part of Charleston, benefiting the economy, tourism, real estate and the general cultural capitol of the city. The arts in Charleston must be advanced through the development of a space that could provide the living artists of Charleston with support and a venue to interact effectively with the public. Visitors planning on attending the event on July 1 are encouraged to draft questions and email them to questions@peoplesartcenter.com ahead of time as there will only be minimal time to answer questions the night of the event.

The Redux Contemporary Art Center will be hosting a panel discussion about the increasing lack of available arts space in downtown Charleston. An unintended consequence of the boom in real estate values on the peninsula has been the loss of studio spaces for artists, the removal of arts organizations from downtown Charleston, and a lack of affordable space for new growth and creative expansion for existing organizations.

It is not so much a question of a lack of space—Charleston has vacant space throughout downtown; however it is becoming increasingly difficult for both artists and arts organizations to secure creative work and presentation space in the city. This is leading to a loss of both working artists and organizations in our area, as they now have to move to other cities to find the resources that they need. The focus of the panel discussion will be solutions to this problem, with a focus on the resources and opportunities needed to maintain a healthy arts presence in Charleston. This event will give the general public the opportunity to hear arts representatives discuss the future of the arts in our city. The public will also be able to address the members of the panel to voice their concerns. The panel discussion is free and open to the public.

Who May Apply
The WCA’s 2nd Annual Exhibition, Intuitive Responses, in conjunction with Piccolo Spoleto is open to all 2008, WCA Charleston Members. Anyone can become a member by joining via Paypal prior to May 5th, or by mailing in an application in addition to this entry form. For non-members, the total fee will be $55, this includes a 2008 membership in the Women’s Caucus for Art, Charleston Chapter, and the National WCA. Currently Arthur McDonald is exhibiting his works created from his handmade paper in galleries throughout the Southeast. He utilizes Asian paper making techniques and styles. In the last decade he studied this traditional art form in studios throughout Asia (Bhutan, Burma, China, Laos, Mongolia, Thailand and Tibet). McDonald is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Theatre at the College of Charleston.

Exhibition Theme
Intuitive Responses is the framework that the juror, Arthur McDonald will use to curate this exhibition. Consider the title when choosing works to submit, but do not feel limited, all works of art will be equally considered.

Entry Specifications
-Submitted works must have been produced within the last two years and not previously exhibited in the Saul Alexander Gallery or any Piccolo Spoleto or MOJA Arts Festival exhibition.
-Members are allowed to submit up to 3 pieces. Please submit one digital image for each 2D entry, which cannot exceed 30” in width, this includes a finished frame, ready for hanging. If submitting 3D artworks, members are allowed to send up to 2 digital images of each piece submitted, 6 images total. 3D artwork cannot exceed 12” x 12” x 24” if sitting on a pedestal, or 30” x 45” x 5” if hanging.
-Email images in .jpg (.jpeg) format, at 72 dpi, not to exceed 8” x 8” to wcaexhibitions@gmail.com
-Include in the body of the email your contact information and an image list, with the title, medium, size and date of each piece submitted. Label your images with number, name and title.

Who May Apply
The 24th Annual Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition is open to all South Carolina artists. Two dimensional, three dimensional, and photography will be included. Applicants must be residents of South Carolina.

Exhibition Juror: Mokhless Al-Hariri, Ph.D.
For over twenty years, Dr. Mokhless Al-Hariri has located, evaluated, selected, and acquired hundreds of pieces of art on behalf of private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. Dr. Al-Hariri’s careful selections of artworks consistently share high stylistic qualities ranging from period pieces, to artworks of contemporary artists. Dr. Al-Hariri will be inviting five South Carolina artists to be featured in union with all accepted juried artworks.

Awards
Prizes awarded include:
1st place: $500; 2nd: $300; 3rd: $150, and six Honorable Mentions.

Artists will be asked to specify if artworks are available for consideration for the Mayor’s Purchase Award: $500-$1,000.

Exhibition Theme
Submitted works must be environmentally themed, but not limited to landscapes or fauna. Juror will be looking for contemporary themes related to the state of our planet and its environment. Thematic examples include: climate change, air/water quality, forestry, sustainable living, etc. Works may be abstract, but must read as environmentally themed pieces.

Entry Specifications & Eligible Works
Fine artworks in all media will be eligible for entry. Juror will be looking for strong themes incorporated by excellent execution of medium(s) chosen in artworks. Submitted works must have been produced within the last two years and not previously exhibited at the Piccolo Spoleto or MOJA Arts Festivals, the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre, City Gallery at the Gaillard Auditorium, or the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. All two dimensional works must be framed and ready to hang in a gallery setting. Three dimensional works must have a pedestal included (not provided). All 2-D artworks must not exceed a weight limit of 35 pounds (including frame).

When I was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter I knew many women that looked forward to it each year and carpooled down for the weekend. We would have much farther to travel but the invitation has been extended us, if anyone would like to go. I want to let you all know about two exciting clay events on December 4 and December 7, co-sponsored by Cone 10 Studios and Plum Elements.

We are having a rare potter guest from Japan in town soon. She is from a porcelain mecca in Japan and a trained master potter. She is part of a very old gas kiln there which is being highfired, very similar to what we do. She is having an exhibit in conjunction with her husband's work at the store Plum Elements on King St. You all may have met the owner Andrea Schenck at some of our openings at Cone 10.

We thought it might be a nice idea to get together with the Japanese artist at Cone 10 one evening. The potter has offered to give a power point presentation about her work and background in ceramics. We have arranged for an interpreter to help with the presentation and conversation.

Please mark your calendar for this not to be missed event: Tue Dec 4th from 6-8pm. Please let me know if you plan to attend or not, so we'll know how many chairs and, more importantly, how much wine, to organize. betseycarter@gmail.com

Call for Entries Juror Guidelines

Juror Patricia Rodriguez has requested that artists ensure continuity in the works that are submitted for this exhibition. That translates to one medium, for example, photographers should not submit both color and black & white; artists who paint and sculpt should submit one or the other, not both. Patricia is also looking for a particular style that is your signature. For example, if you paint, don’t send both abstract and realism. She wants pieces that represent your particular style.

The images you submit should represent the show’s theme but they should represent your work as a unified body as well.

Business Practices for Creative Artists

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art will host a two-part workshop on Saturday, November 3rd from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 pm, designed for the working artist who wishes to learn more about legal, financial, and tax strategies tailored to the creative professional. CPA and owner of Positus Consulting, Andra Watkins, will present two sessions focusing on basic, yet useful accounting strategies for non-accountants. Frank Dirks of UBS Financial Services will focus on retirement and investment strategies in the afternoon sessions. Both presenters will be available to meet one-on-one with artists following the sessions. In order to make this accessible to artists, the Halsey Institute will charge a fee of $15 for HICA Members and students and $25 for non-members to cover meal expenses (breakfast and lunch will be provided). Reservations are required and seating is limited. Please email halsey@cofc.edu or call 843.953.9121 to make a reservation.

Please observe the motifs of the Afghan women as seen on the Rubia site and create your response and interpretation of the theme through images of the poppy, the rubia logo, etc. as found on Rubia Website.

We will use fabric artwork embroidered by the Afghan women and we add to it your pieces (quilt style) with squares created by WCA members to create an impressive larger tapestry piece.

Rubia is a project of Social & Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), a registered 501(c) [3], which provides non-profit status. Rubia serves women in Afghanistan, offering education, skills training and income opportunities through the promotion of their traditional handwork. Rubia is committed to building sustainable business in a fragile environment,empowering women while respecting traditional ways, reviving and preserving traditional crafts.

Laura has been invited to exhibit at the upcoming art show "View From the Water's Edge." The show is a Piccolo Spoleto Art Auction to be held at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. The opening reception is Friday, November 9th, from 5-7 pm. The closing is December 1st from 5-9 pm, featuring the Holiday Parade of Boats Viewing Party. "Join the Washington D.C. Chapter and ArTTable on Sunday, November 11, from 1:30 - 4:00 pm at American University's Katzen Arts Center for a lively discussion of how and whether the feminist art movement has made a difference for women in the arts today. The forum will be held in the Abramson Family Recital Hall in the Katzen Arts Center, which is located on the Ward Circle at Nebraska and Massachusetts Avenues, NW. The is no charge for the event. Parking is free under the building on the weekend; enter from Massachusetts Ave."

Panelists include Judy Byron, HIRO, Victoria Reis, Joyce J. Scott and moderator Josephine Withers, the founder of the D.C. Chapter.

This forum also coincides with two anniversary exhibitions on view in Washington, Art and the Feminist Revolution, at the National Museum of Women and Claiming Space: Some American Feminist Originators, at the American University Museum.

*The impetus for these exhibitions and forum is the 35th Anniversary of the Women's Caucus for Art and the 20th anniversary of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

This meeting is critique based, bring a few of your pieces if you'd like to participate! (Bringing your own art work is not required to join in on the critique.)

Directions from downtown: (If coming from James/Johns Island, pick up the directions starting at the turn onto South Windemer)
Take 17S onto the W. Ashley Bridge. Stay in MIDDLE LANE (important) and at end of bridge make a left at sign for Folly Beach. Stay in right lane, make a right (I think it's the second stoplight but not sure) onto South Windemere Blvd. There will be a nail palace and photo store before the light, Earth Fare on your left. At end of S. Windemere, take a left onto Chadwick. Chadwick curves around a bit,then Rebellion Rd. veers off to the right. Our house is 33 Rebellion, you pass about 6 houses and it's straight ahead to the right.

If you come from W. Ashley travelling 0n 17N (Savannah Highway or St. Andrews), make a right on Stocker, then a right on Chadwick, Chadwick curves around a bit, then Rebellion Rd. veers off to the right. Our house is 33 Rebellion, you pass about 6 houses and it's straight ahead to the right.

Meeting Minutes

If you did not receive the email with the minutes from last weeks meeting attached, please email wcacharleston@yahoo.com for a copy. Looking through the minutes is a great way to find out about up coming events, like our informal Art Walk get together and our next meeting at Sandra Brett's house.

Below are opportunities that each need a volunteer:

-Event Calendar (A Google calendar linked to the blog where WCA activities and local art events are posted and kept up-to-date. -This requires a very small commitment once a week, and if you already read the City Paper and Preview, this would be easy!)

-Application Coordinator (Someone willing to gather the necessary materials needed to apply as a group for exhibition opportunities.)

-Publicity and Community Outreach (This involves notifying the local and
regional arts publications, newspapers, list-serves, website based calendars, etc when the WCA Charleston Chapter holds meetings, or is involved in any community event. This volunteer could also coordinate with other members to maintain the brochures, posters and cards that are placed in the community.)

-Membership Coordinator (Receives the letters and checks from National, forwarding the checks to the Treasurer, and maintaining a membership roll with contact information and membership expiration. Also responsible for mailing letters during the membership drive.) *Christine Eadie volunteered for this!

-Minutes (Taking minutes based on the agenda as determined by the President, or whoever is leading that months meeting, typing them shortly after each meeting and turning them in to the President for the purpose of emailing out to members. -Very easy, my outlines which I will provide to the volunteer are detailed and you will only need to jot down a few notes, and then type them.)

-Quarterly Email Newsletter (Involves recruiting and/or researching the emails of the art administers, gallery professionals, organizers, educators, students etc. in the community that could benefit from a notification of the WCA’s activities.)

Meeting Location Has Changed!

Due to an unforeseen conflict the location for our Wednesday meeting has changed. It will now be at Saffron at 7 pm, 333 East Bay Street. (Not at the Kensington Stobart Gallery on King Street as previously announced) Saffron is across the street from the Eckerd and East Bay Deli shopping center. There is parking off of East Bay in front of Saffron as well as behind the building on Alexander Street.

To access the parking lot behind Saffron, follow the directions above but continue past the restaurant and turn left onto Calhoun Street. Take your first left onto Alexander Street. Look to your left, after passing a church, you'll see a small metered lot that you can pull in to. (The meters are free after 6 pm and Saffron has front doors facing both East Bay and Alexander. Come on in!)
